FF: Hi James and welcome to Freelance Factory. How did you find out about FF and what do you think about the concept?
James: Freelance Factory is great! And it has really worked for me, great job FF!
It would be great if it was more widely used in the industry nationally/globally.
How did you start out as a freelancer? I started freelancing when on a working holiday in the UK, loved it and stayed there a couple of years freelancing with a whole range of advertising agencies and design studios. I enjoyed it so much that when I eventually returned home to Australia, I decided to keep freelancing here.
How long have you been freelancing? and why do you choose to freelance?
About 5 years now. It suits me well, I really enjoy the variety in work it provides me and the flexible working conditions along with the independence of being self employed.
What do you specialise in?
I specialise in concept development for a whole range of marketing, advertising and communications material. I am also often involved in the complete development and execution of these projects as well.
How does freelancing affect your lifestyle?
Freelancing gives me the flexibility to work remotely from almost anywhere and the freedom to work the hours that suit me. I'm based in here in Sydney but spend a lot of time in Melbourne and Adelaide. I enjoy being able to travel. Currently I work with clients in Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth plus occasionally the UK, Canada and even Bermuda too!
What has been your career highlights?
Career highlight would have to be working in Bermuda for two years through Saatchi & Saatchi. Plus the freedom to travel all over the world and being able to support myself by freelancing along the way.
Do you teach your expertise to others?
I currently teach the Masterclass at Shillington College in Sydney. A part-time course (Saturdays 8am - 5pm) for practicing designers wanting to expand their design skills and improve their portfolio. www.shillingtoncollege.com.au
What other interests do you have?
Like most creatives I'm into anything interesting! I love travel, music, art and I'm quite mad about cycling (and the Adelaide Crows. Shhhh!).
