Introducing Neal Vaughan - freelance advertising copywriter. Copy, direct mail to TV.
Hi Neal and welcome to Freelance Faces.
How did you start your career in advertising?
After starting my writing career as a local news and feature reporter in London, I then went on to work for some of Australia's biggest (and smallest) agencies covering a broad range of business while picking up a few awards along the way.
When did you start freelancing?
After long agency spells as CD and senior writer, I'm now a writer for hire.
What do you specialise in?
I guess if I have a particular talent, it's making the complex simple and not taking forever doing it!
I'm equally at home taking charge of a campaign as I am filling the role of wordsmith and ideas generator.
I like writing and enjoy long copy including brochures, mailers and detailed websites. Technical stuff like IT or finance doesn't phase me. In short, I deliver quality 'on-the-money' creative work with a flexible attitude at reasonable cost.
What is your Red Shoe website concept?
As a freelance copywriter and scriptwriter I collaborated with film cinematographer and director Carolyn Constantine to create unique business videos and educational films. Blending direction, top class cinematography, expert set dressing, a sense of humour and accomplished actors with an ability to turn business language into plain English - all on an affordable budget. Why do you freelance?
Well apart from the obvious - paying the bills bit, I like having the flexibility to develop my own writing projects. So far these include two feature length film scripts, writing and directing a couple of short movies and a quarter of a book.
Do you think this has enhanced your advertising copywriting skills?
Without a doubt. The diversity of writing has broadened my creative scope and taken my writing a stage further. Last year I directed and co-produced a couple of ads and corporate videos for my clients. So I can offer a complete service for anyone wanting to create video content for the web or a good old fashioned corporate video or TV ad. I have a talented cinematographer and crew available to give great looking results without all the usual production house over-heads.
