INTRODUCING STEPHEN WRIGHT.
Freelancer specialising in branding and effective design - for print, packaging and digital.
FF: Hi Stephen and welcome to Freelance Faces. How did you start out as a freelancer?
Stephen: After about 6 years working in several ad and design agencies, I took the plunge, started freelancing - and loved it! That feeling of being thrown in the deep end? Awesome. I tend to work best under pressure. Love the adrenaline rush! Being raised in Jo'burg must be partly to blame I guess - on the knife-edge of African life. So I just thrive on the adrenaline rush of a tight deadline.
I've been freelancing for about 11 years now ... roughly half of my creative career here in Sydney.
What do you specialise in?
This is the hardest to pin down because I tend to be very flexible - blurring the traditional boundaries between print design, branding, finished art and digital. Suffice to say that my work tends to be driven by strong creative direction and is strategically creative, not merely 'decorative'. I aim to provide results through strategic design and enjoy working with like-minded clients
How does freelancing affect your lifestyle?
The constant variety and fast pace is a huge attraction! Also on the other hand, for the work/life balance freelancing gives me the flexibility to be involved in my community charity work and to 'be there' for my little kids on a day-to-day basis, like doing school drop off.
What have been your career highlights?
1. Early on in my freelance career working with Nelson Mandela's presidential inauguration material was a huge privilege, (huge buzz to see your work in something so historic).
2. In 2000 working on Coca Cola's 'Look of the Games' style guides.
3. More recently my work for NAB's Custom Fleet (now owned by GE Capital), where over a period of 5 years I built up their brand and staff incentives, to the point where they achieved $1billion in sales globally.
4. Campaign work for Sydney's real estate and jewellery industries has also been tremendously enjoyable.
What other interests do you have?
My personal creative work includes photography, video and contemporary mosaic art. In late 2012 I'm aiming to hold a small exhibition which is pretty exciting for me.
I also LOVE typography, so dabble in font design using Fontlab studio. I enjoy experimenting with HTML 5.0/JavaScript animation: it's the future of the web especially for IOS!
When I'm not designing I can be found mountain biking in Sydney's north shore bushland. Or scuba diving, depending on the weather!

Where do you usually source freelance work?
Mainly word of mouth or via referral.
How did you find out about the Freelance Factory and what do you think of the concept?
I discovered Freelance Factory a few years ago via AdNews. When I finally contacted Jenni, she couldn't have been more helpful. Now that I have joined, I'm just so chuffed to be here!
